It's a new world. Thy way in which we go about getting new customers, or trying new products is changing. Habituation has taken full effect, and the constant stream of advertising pushed on us is no longer working. Studies show more and more people rely on user ratings over product sales sheets. Said differently, it no longer matters if Sony tells me their latest television has a great picture and increased reliability - instead, I'm going to rely on what other purchasers have to say.

I'm tremendously excited to have Mark, Leisa and team join forces with the community and continue the user experience momemtum. Given their prior work, I truly believe they're the team to help extract us from the minutia, think big, and create an experience that expands Drupal's adoption. Welcome aboard!

As with any good design process, they'll kick this project off at Drupalcon DC by conducting research. So far, they've identified two activities:

“Specialists are professionals who have the time, experience, and projects to allow them to go deep into a discipline such as information architecture or visual design.

“Because they can concentrate on the one discipline, they become very knowledgeable and experienced at solving the problems that crop up. Having a specialist on board is often very valuable, since they’ll know how to tackle the many subtleties that can make or break a project.

I find this screenshot rather telling. Its of an IRC chat room used to gather and talk about ways to improve Drupal. In this chat, Yoroy, an active contributor, is talking about a design that's been in the works for several months now, and is starting to change direction. I can't be sure, but I'm hoping he's rallying the troops to weigh in so that the design stays on track. This reminds me of a situation that used to take place at Fidelity Investments
